The upcoming introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is a significant event that requires careful preparation by all traders, including those in the e-commerce sector. Adapting your online store is not just a technical task, but a strategic move that will ensure legal compliance, an optimised user experience and maintain customer trust. In the following lines, we'll look at the key aspects to consider.
The changeover to the euro is subject to clear legal requirements set out in the National Euro Changeover Plan. These requirements apply to all traders, whether they operate physical outlets or online shops.
Double price display : The new standard
One of the most important duties is simultaneous display of prices in Bulgarian lev and euro. This requirement will come into force from the first month after the date of the official decision to adopt the euro. The dual pricing period will last up to 12 months after the actual introduction of the euro as the official currency.
It is important to respect the principle of clarity and unambiguity. The two prices must be displayed together, next to the product, so that they are easily understood by the consumer. In addition, the final amount paid by the customer must be reflected in both currencies on both the receipt and the invoice.
Fixed exchange rate and rounding
The currency conversion will use fixed exchange rate: 1 euro = 1.95583 leva. This rate must be clearly visible to consumers throughout the period of dual display of prices to ensure full transparency in the conversion of values.
In addition, the legislation provides specific rules for rounding of prices in euro to the second decimal place, according to generally accepted mathematical rules. For example, if a price in euros is €9.776, it should be rounded to €9.78. This rule is permanent and is not linked to the duration of the transitional period.
Consumer protection and control
In order to prevent unjustified price increases during the transition, the state provides for consumer protection measures. The prohibition of speculative price increases will be in force from the start of the dual display until at least 6 months after the adoption of the euro. Compliance with these requirements will be monitored by the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).
For online retailers, the way prices are displayed has a direct impact on user experience and search engine visibility.
- Dynamic switching and SEO: Develop functionality that allows customers to switch between prices in BGN and EUR using, for example, URL parameters (such as ?currency=euro). However, it is key that these specific URLs are not indexed by search engines to avoid issues with duplicate content. Use rel="canonical" tags that point to the main version of the page, or directives in the robots.txtto manage indexing.
- Using Structured Data (Schema Markup): To provide search engines like Google with accurate information about your prices in both currencies, implement Schema Markup for their products. By tagging prices with the correct currency information, you help search engines understand and display correct data in search results (SERPs), which is especially important for users searching for products after the transition.
- Visual representation: Make sure that the dual prices are clearly and distinctly displayed next to each product without merging or looking confusing. Good user interface design will make it easier for customers to grasp the information.
Beyond the national information campaign, every trader has an important role to play in informing their customers.
- Information transparency: Active communication with customers on the changeover is strongly recommended. You can use banners on the website, a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, email newsletters or social media notifications.
- Prevention of confusion: Clear and consistent information will help prevent confusion and build trust in your online store during this transition period. Ensure that all processes - from product browsing to order finalisation and checkout - are tailored and clear to users.
